Culture Line

Back Gyeong-cheol Was Awarded in Public Design Contest

Back Gyeong-cheol of Chungnam National University was awarded the grand prize in the 4th Daejeon public design contest. He submitted a "Culture Line" in the contest to create new cultural spaces in old downtown Daejeon. According to Daejeon City, many undergraduates from 54 universities and 367 citizens submitted a total of 328. This contest was for spaces and streets design, public facilities, and graphic designs; its main theme was creating an old downtown Daejeon that world drew more people.

Culture Line! What For?

The "Culture Line" submitted by Back Gyeong-cheol received high praises because of great idea to revive downtown Daejeon. The "Culture Line" introduces the concept of a Residence program for artists. These artists would be given public space on the top of leased buildings where they could create public spectacles. This would encourage artists to create and simultaneously revitalize old Downtown Daejeon. The population of this idea is on the rise.

Motivation for His Works

He said that he had been interested in reviving Old Downtown because he was ashamed to watch it being neglected. He had watched carefully how downtown has changed for the worse. In his lengthy time in Daejeon, he had studied the best way to revitalize Old downtown.

Preparation Processes

Looking around downtown for preparation, he saw some artists working in solitary conditions in leases buildings. He then saw empty spaces and rooftops that were unused. After noticing this, he decided to introduce Residence Program using the stairs and similar level of building. He thought that many artists will be able to communicate with each other, making the decayed downtown grow by attracting floating population who need cultural spaces for open exhibitions and performances. In addition, he thought that new green fields could offer resting places for those who would come to the active market area.

How about Participating in Many Contests Like Him?

Back Gyeong-cheol whom I interviewed with is a winner of the public design contest. He said that he wants to build buildings that fit with their surroundings. Back Gyeong-cheol said that the judges evaluated his ideas more than execution and presentation. To be honeste, his computer didn't work perfectly. Daejeon holds many contests like public design contest to reflect creative ideas from applicants.
