Campus Operations held a special lecture on incorporation on September 30th. The lecture aimed at understanding the incorporation process of Seoul National University(SNU) and applying in to the situation of our university. Kim sin-bok, a professor and an ex-vice-president who pursued the incorporation of SNU led the talk.
"In order to have competitiveness, structural reform is necessary for national universities in Korea," Kim said. Before his presentation, Lee Yoon-seob, the chief of the planning committee, explained why we need to reform the structure. "If it is incorporated, the university will be free from government intervention and can take the initiative in personnel management, organization and budger allocations," Lee said.
As soon as Lee's presented, he faced a fusillade of questions from attendees. "About 70 percent of professors are opposed to the plan. Despite this, the administration is pursuing incorporation dogmatically. In this situation, is it true that the administration holds the opinion that you stated today?" Kim Pil-dong, a representative of the faculty council said. He also pointed out some contradictory logic. "You emphasize the only way that national university can developed is incorporation, but the ranking of Chonbuk National University which is not incorporated has gone up and of course the fairness of the university ranking system is doubtful in Korea," Kim said. Kim Hyung-tae stated, "It is doubtful that this bill will make CNU completely financial free and independent." Also Choi Sang-min, an accounting major student questioned, "Do you really think the condition in CNU is the same as in SNU?"
It seemed hard to get an agreement as a lot of dissenting voices appeared during the special lecture for promoting incorporation.
