Have you used CNU’s library lately? You may have been immediately overwhelmed by the extensive spaces and ground-breaking facilities. It has been two years since the remodeling of the library was completed, which made the additional space and facilities available. The previous library had many shortcomings, such as looking old, insufficient storage space, outdated facilities, and so on. Accordingly, the government, CNU, and private donors invested approximately 33.3 billion won in the construction of two new floors, above and below ground.

The first goal of this project was to provide a pleasant reading environment and a comfortable research and learning place for users by offering access to state-of-the-art facilities. The second goal was to establish a cultural space where local citizens and students can interact. How were these goals achieved, and what has been the reaction of users? Are users satisfied with the remodeled library? If not, what are the reasons for their dissatisfaction?

To obtain opinions from users, we conducted an online survey and an offline interview regarding the remodeled library. Approximately 76% of the participants expressed satisfaction with the remodeled library. In particular, most users were satisfied with the spacious, pleasant areas. They were also satisfied with the variety of amenities, including the convenience store and coffee shop, as well as the Creative Zones and rest areas.

However, there were also opinions expressing dissatisfaction with the library. Although the percentage of people dissatisfied with the remodeling was relatively low, about 5%, even the majority of satisfied users felt uncomfortable in some way with the library. The biggest complaint concerned problems with the library app, which many users agreed was too slow. Many users were also dissatisfied with the library’s short opening hours, with many requests received for it to remain open 24 hours. There were also many complaints about Wi-Fi being complicated to use and prone to error. Furthermore, we received complaints about the insufficient number of places to consume food and drink.

Regarding noise levels on the first basement floor, which received a lot of attention before, there were many opinions stating that pleasant sounds should be produced. But, on the other hand, a few insisted that it remain quiet. A student who requested anonymity during the interview with The Chungdae Post asserted, “It is too cumbersome to reserve a seat in the reading room, and the atmosphere is too stiff.” However, the first basement floor currently provides a unique space with moderate noise levels, so it feels like studying in a café, which can result in studying intently.

CNU library users also expressed their opinions on a range of other subjects. Some users expressed their opinions about disrespectful users, asking that they refrain from the unauthorized use of unassigned seats and insisting that they turn up after reserving a seat. In addition, they expressed opinions on entry methods, connectivity to the annex, heating/cooling systems, lack of power outlets, aging of the reference room, rest areas, and so on.

The library support team emphasized in an interview with The Chungdae Post that they are aware of these problems and are working to solve them step-by-step. Regarding the library app, they stated that they are continuously trying to improve it by simplifying its features and changing the user interface. To produce a pleasant sound, they are planning to play music on B1, one of the original goals. Concerning the library’s opening hours, a lack of personnel has been the main problem. They extend the opening hours only during exam periods. They are planning to apply for government financial support, but even if possible, only the first floor will stay open for longer due to the expected low number of users late at night. As for insufficient places to eat, they have previously addressed this problem by expanding the area where people may consume food and drink near GS25.

The CNU library, remodeled to create a pleasant reading environment and a communicative culture space, is fulfilling its role, as demonstrated by the overall satisfaction of users. Thanks to the efforts of library officials actively trying to solve the highlighted problems, I hope that CNU’s library becomes a new landmark in the local community.
