These days, many environmental problems are harming the world. Natural disasters constantly strike. Indeed, more disasters are occurring these days than ever before. A few weeks ago, torrential rain pelted Pohang on the south side of Korea. Many people lost their lives. Also, earthquakes are constantly hitting places around the world. As environmental problems arise more often, more people are focusing on the environment. Consequently, there are now various eco-friendly cultures, especially among the young generation. Moreover, this generation has independently developed new eco-friendly cultures.

Today, let me introduce the young generation’s eco-friendly cultures. Eco-friendly consumption is the first example. Generation Z is loosely anyone born between 1995 and 2009 (colloquially known as zoomers). Many zoomers think that social values are important, so they want to spend their money on socially-acceptable items. Their values make them green consumers, and they purchase vegan products: vegan cosmetics, vegan foods, and vegan-friendly clothes. Also, they buy recycled products like those from the well-known company Freitag. By looking at the proportion of users in their 20s of a used-product trading platform, you can get an insight into how much the young generation focuses on environmental values.

Even while traveling, the young generation acts to preserve the environment. For example, there is beachcombing. Beachcombing is a compound word that combines beach and combing, and it refers to collecting garbage that has washed up on the beach. Through beachcombing, zoomers remove marine debris that pollutes the ocean and threatens the marine ecosystem. In addition, they clean the environment by ploving (a portmanteau of plocka upp, which means pick up in Swedish, and diving). The younger generation contemplates ways to travel while protecting the environment, such as visiting eco-tourism sites, outback sites, etc.

In this way, new environmental cultures are being created by people thinking about the environment in ever more diverse ways. There is also a need for such eco-friendly cultures to become the culture of not only the young generation but also everyone else. How about participating in these easy-to-follow eco-friendly cultures? It is important to participate in eco-friendly cultures, especially given the increasingly serious global environmental situation and in consideration of future generations. Don't think of eco-friendly culture as too complicated. Just embrace it!
