When I think of the image of Daejeon, I think of it as the city of science. In Daejeon, there are many places we can experience the world of science closely, such as the National Science Museum and Expo Science Park. However, Daejeon is not only a city of science but also a city of culture and art. Daejeon Culture and Art Complex includes the Daejeon City Museum of Art, Daejeon Arts Center, etc. It is a place where we can enjoy various artistic fields, such as art, music, and dance. I would like to introduce a special exhibition underway at the Daejeon Museum of Art.

The exhibition is the Daejeon Art and Science Biennale 2022: Future of Cities. Since 2000, the Daejeon Museum of Art has held an international biennale centering on Daejeon's science and technology and culture and arts. The goal of this exhibition is to strengthen the city brand of Daejeon, Korea’s central city of science and art. Works containing diverse perspectives on the future and environments of cities, such as inter-city networks and new urban cultures, are exhibited. As it is an international exhibition, artists from various countries such as Japan, France, Italy, and the Netherlands have contributed.

Through this exhibition, we can think about ways for all living and even non-living things, such as AI, to live together on Earth in future cities. The exhibition has three sections. The first section is Terrapolis for All. Terrapolis is a combination of the Latin word terra, which means land, with the Greek word polis, which means a city with a political system. Section 1 focuses on the potential of all life on Earth, which is inseparable, to create a world with equal rights. It shows the potential of future cities that humans and non-humans can create together.

The second section, Once Called Future, highlights the problems in cities we are currently facing and the artistic imagination of future cities. Humanity is suffering from many crises, including climate change, ecological crises, and pandemics. Nature has brought us an abundance of beauty and prosperity, but humankind has destroyed nature for a long time. Section 2 seeks to show the direction of future cities. By interpreting cities anew, we can see works demonstrating the ideal city.

In the third section, Dimensional Intersection, we can realize that through advanced digital technology we will face a completely new type of city where virtual reality and real reality overlap. Owing to the pandemic and advances in technology, such as artificial intelligence and augmented reality, we are facing a new way of life online. Section 3 considers how humans and non-humans should coexist in the metaverse.

Have you ever thought about future cities? The city of the future may be a more advanced metaverse society, or it may be devastated and no longer exist. We have to be interested in the city of the future. In this exhibition, various problems with current cities, such as environmental crises and the pandemic, are vividly presented. Through this exhibition, we can understand the harmony needed to pursue a brighter future for all concerned.
