The Inauguration of 18th President

Leap into the World, CNU as the University that Represents Korea.

The inauguration of the 18th President took place last March at CNU. This election was in the spotlight with controversies surrounding the electoral system by which a president is elected. The new president has big plans for CNU.

 1. The Inauguration of the 18th President.

Chungdae post No.253 features debates surrounding direct and indirect electoral systems. From March 14, the 18thPresident, Dr.Oh Deok-Seong assumed office at White Horse Hall in the Jeongsimhwa International Cultural Center. He served as the chief of the Foreign Cooperation Department at CNU until last year. The president emphasized that he would do his best as the president. He also stated that he would make Chungnam National University the university that represents Korea. He has promised to continuously communicate with students so that it would be possible to achieve goals, if we all work together. Finally, he added, “I ask for your continuous love and support for CNU.” Let’s look at him and his promises in detail.

 2. What CNU Aims For

 -3 goals

The mission statement set by the president is “to leap into the world and to become the university that represents Korea.” He has set 3 goals. The first goal is to be a university that promotes creative talents. That can be achieved by enhancing the liberal arts, expanding double majors, increasing the capacity of teaching staff. The second goal is to be a leading university for learning and development. It can be achieved by focusing on research and the regional industries. The third goal is to be a representative globalized university based on our regions, Daejeon, Sejong, and the Chungcheong province, where we will cultivate close cooperation. He said he will improve CNU to be one of the top 10 universities in Korea by meeting these goals.

 -4 Objectives

The president has set 4 objectives. The first is to improve the effectiveness of education, learning, and university-industry cooperation. Second is to construct a support system to improve competitiveness. Third is to work in partnership with regional industries. Fourth is to make the university community happy.

With respect to the first and second objectives, liberal arts and education courses will be reorganized. The founding of a liberal arts education university, and strengthening personality education and the dormitory types of the liberal education programs correspond with these 2 missions. He will expand major education of creative fusion infrastructure to respond for a new era. Developing fusion major programs based on NCS(National Competency Standards) with the ministries, local governments, research institutions, and Industries corresponds with this mission. Another pledge is to reorganize the support system to attract excellent students and revitalize employment and foundations. Specifically, that pledge includes experts of entrance examination and special scholarship to attract excellent students in or out of Korea and Honors programs in graduate school.

There are some promises associated with the third and the fourth objectives as well. He will actively make an attempt to preserve the CNU’s current status as a region position national university. To do these things, our university must progress in humanities, arts, and natural sciences and establish fusion research laboratory for multidisciplinary studies. Also, the university culture through online and off-line communication will be further developed. To do these, regularizing acceptances of the opinions of all members is needed. Also, the online communication culturemust be realized. It connects with university mass media like the CNU newspaper and broadcasting, the founding communication and welfare committees, and the Committee for Foreign Cooperation. All of these pledges could be suggested because the president, Oh Deok-Seong was the former vice president of Foreign Cooperation Department at CNU.

The new president, Oh Deok-Seong, laid out the visions for CNU and new developmental directions. If we all make effort, these goals will be achieved. We look forward to seeing CNU leaping into the world as a university that represents Korea.
