Last August there was a terrible case where a man raped a sleeping female student in a Busan University’s dormitory. Because of this case, many students think the dormitory is not safe from any crime. The CP reporters cover how CNU students who live in the dormitory think about the safety problem.
What Is The Story on CNU Dormitory Safety?
1. Ineffective Front Door Security
2. Small Security Offices And Few Guards
CNU’s dormitory is big enough to accommodate almost 4,700 students. However, even though it has 13 buildings,
there are only 2 security offices, at No. 3 and No. 7. If students run into danger, they must go to another building
to ask for a help. However, most students don’t know the telephone number of the officers.
3. Student’s Thoughts about It
In a survey targeting students who live in the dormitory, many students thought that they need more safety precautions. They think the present security equipment is not enough to protect them. Therefore, they are experiencing anxiety every day. When the current equipment doesn’t work properly, the anxiety gets bigger.
What Can Be Done?
First, more devices are needed at the front door in addition to blood vessel recognition.
The blood vessel recognition has too many disadvantages, so students can’t rely on it for safety.
Second, the dormitory should expand the number of guards. At night, student instructors stand on several places and guard people who pass through dormitory. However, it is not only for safety and they are not professionals. Besides, they go to their own rooms at midnight. Then, there is no guard except in the 2 buildings. The best
way to protect students is to install security offices in every building and putting guards in there. It will have on effect on crime prevention.
Third, many students think that more CCTVs are needed around buildings. In a building, only elevators have it. To prevent access to outsiders, CCTV should be installed in every hall and hallway additionally. Students say that
CNU’s dormitory is not safe enough to prevent crime. They don’t regard the dormitory as a truly safety place.
Last, When we think about it, there are many other ways to protect students. CNU and the officers who work for the dormitory should think about this seriously and try to find better preparations for safety. Moreover, they should
have a strong sense of responsibility to make a safer dormitory for students.
