Inside Campus
People generally say that food prices inside the university are low. Above all things, lunch expense is a large part of student spending. School cafeterias are crowded. Cafeteria meals are regarded as low price food. Chungnam National University Cafeteria sells dishes at the rate of 2,500 won to 5,000 won. There is no doubt that this is an inexpensive price. With the exception of the franchise shops, most items being sold on campus are cheaper then outside campus.
As a starting point, you can use the price of Zhajiangmian. The school restaurant price is 3,000 won. How about in Gung-dong which is next to our campus? One Chinese restaurant in Gung-dong sells it ar 3,500 won and the other restaurant sells it at 4,000won. Gung-dong is more expensive by 500 won to 2,000 won to campus. It is quite clear that campus sells food at the lower price except for franchise shops such as a popeyes or Familymart, you can lower costs on campus.
Although campus price is lower than Gung-dong, it doesn’t mean that Gung-dong is a village with high-prices products. Most students think the food prices in Gung-dong are not so expensive. Compared with the food price in Dunsan-dong, “Gung-dong prices are too high.” Everybody will agree on that.
Let’s compare some menus. How about Hoe-deop-bap? You can be stuffed with it in Gung-dong. You only have to pay 5,000 won at M restaurant. In Dunsan-dong, you have to pay about 8,000 won at C restaurant. Needless to say, quality as well as amount is for better than lower priced products in Gung-dong.
What about coffee prices in Gung-dong? Except for franchise cafes, Americano costs at 2,000 won to 2,500 won. That coffee price is modest. You have to pay from 3,000 won to 4,000 won to drink it at well known franchise shop.
You can see the increase in the upper graph. Gung-dong also follows this situation. Students naturally say "When I was freshman, thc dishes were cheap." or "The last time I came here, the meals were plentiful." Many restaurants choose to strictly focus on profits by raising prices and decreasing the quantity of food.
Mr. Choi who works as a street vendor, responds to student gripes by saying, "Everything is expensive. Now I cannot give you four bungoe-ppangs at 1,000 won." He has to but increase the price because that Dan-pod, sugar and even a LPG Price increased. He says, "I have maintained the existing price since 2004. However I can't stand it anymore."
"First, I kept on my eyes on coffee prices on campus. Triangle and Pandorothy provide coffee at low price. I am really happy.
