Immersion

Immersion is the psychological state in which one is intensely encountering something, according to Csilk Szentmihalyi. It blocks everything around us beside the one thing that we want to concentrate on. When we are immersed in that thing, we feel like several hours is just a few minutes. We feel a sense of unity with the object of immersion and lose our senses of ego at the same time.

Immersion is one way to make life rich and happy. We feel accomplishment of task when we deeply fall into something. Also, if we immerse ourselves in work, someone we love, or a hobby, our daily lives would be more valuable.

There are things that one needs to do in order to prepare for a better immersion experience. First, set up a goal that is not too hard or easy. Maybe one or two steps higher than you could do, because if it is too hard, you might give up easily. Second, receive feedback quickly. We can realize what we should do to reach the goal when we have quick feedback about the results.

Though there are some kinds of immersion that we should avoid, such as gambling or online games, the positive types of immersion make our lives rich. I believe all of the students of Chungnam National University can find their own positive immersion. I wish we would live very interesting life from the immersion.
