I take a stand against the relative evaluation system. There are some reasons for why I have such a negative stand towards the relative evaluation. The first reason is that the excessive competitive senses caused by relative evaluation arouses selfishness and it would make it difficult to develop a society of coexistence. It’ a clear fact that our society has been highly developed in recent years. However, now, it is time to stop the rapid development and to look around how our society is sick. Therefore, we need the community spirit for our society, not the competitive sense.
The second reason is that the relative evaluation system would makes the students lose the ability to see the forest for the trees. The ultimate stage which we aim for is a society, not just the university. But, under relative evaluation system it’ difficult to compare with other groups in society. It means the system is only effective inside groups.
Finally, the last reason is the relative evaluation system doesn’ seem to respect relative efforts. If there are somebody smarter than you in the class, your effort would be unappreciated no matter how hard you did. Thus, such a ranking system has the danger causing result-oriented attitudes. Also, the result-oriented atmosphere in the class may get the students depressed and feel inferior.

The university education is not a basic education, but later a higher education. So rather than simply placing in the line, it should be an absolute rating system that can identify an individual’ abilities and characteristics.
Essentially, universities are institutions for study. University students are learning a variety of disciplines from engineering to the humanities and the ways to evaluate each major are numerous. It is unreasonable to evaluate various studies within the standardized relative evaluation system. Assessment must be made to fit the characteristics of each course. For this, students and professors must create a new assessment through communication. Also, the new evaluation method should respect the student’ diversity and creativity. Under the relative evaluation system, only a few students can get a good grade. It is unnecessarily competitive and unsuitable for the conversation. On the other hand, the absolute evaluation system is easy to allow listening students’opinions, and professors can present a variety of opinions. In order to achieve the different evaluation method and communication requires an absolute evaluation system.
In terms at the realistic side, the Chungnam National University employment rate is only 48.5% (2014 base year). The addition of the relative evaluation is killing the students’prospects more and more. I wonder if these competitions are of help to the students and the university. Students risked everything in this competition in society and school from an early age and are in charge of the war. Despite the problem of the competition-oriented society, universities are never stopping making a battleground. To accept the wide range of the academic, and help to find position in the real world, the absolute evaluation that can discuss more variously is favorable than relative evaluation that share the percentage from the top. Therefore, conducting a relative evaluation should be reconsidered.
