Ancient Futures
- Written by Helena Norberg-hodge

Ladakh is a state in Nothern India. The name means a uphill land. As the name indicates, Ladakh is located in an alpine region over 3,500m high. This book is a story about the people who live in Ladakh. Because of the geographical property, Ladakh has been separated from modern civilization for a long time. In 1975, the writer came to this land to study their language, but she was moved by their traditional values and optimistic view of life. Even though living in a barren land, they are satisfied with their lives and keep their composure. Before she came to Ladakh, she had no doubt that western civilization is modern life, and it is busy and tough. However, staying in Ladakh, she experienced a more desirable life, apart from her existing life. Frugality is the fountain of their richness. Gaining the most from the least is their way of life. Thus, they make a good living with limited resources. They also believe they are a part of whole world, and connected with one another. This belief gives them independent spirits and close relationships with neighbors.
