Chungnam National University's students were awarded the grand prize from 'the Idea Competition of Spreading Green Culture for Low Carbon Green Campus.' The awards ceremony occurred December 9, 2011, in the Yonsei-Samsung Library, Yonsei University.
The ministry of Environment and Korea Environment Corporation hosted this contest to increase awareness among university students about counteracting climate change by promoting outstanding ideas and practical examples. The contest was divided into two sections; one was Practice Memoirs and the other was UCC (User Created Contents). The idea competition was progressed starting from the judgment of preliminary round; finally 10 works could get awarded.
The winners were Jung Da-un, Woo Jong-un, Hong Suk-hyun, and Guk Geum-kyung. Their team, 'We're Fine,' is made up of four juniors majoring in Fine Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry. The group's idea was: <Paper-saving through using double-sided paper, resulting in the reduction of CO2 gas emissions. With this UCC, they placed first in the idea competition and received 2,000,000 won in prize money.
The UCC <Paper-saving through using double-sided paper, resulting in the reduction of CO2 gas emission> focuses on paper used in school work. Using double-sided paper, we can save the amount of paper used, and consequently a large number of trees if the entire country's university students participate. This practice even can lead to reduce CO2 the earth. The concept is so easy practice in daily life that this content was well-received by audiences and judges.

    Q. What motivated the four of you to enroll in this competition?
Is there anything interesting? We College of Engineering students are always busy these days. We want escape from the monotony in our daily lives." Our proup (jung Da-un, Woo Jong-un, Hong Suk-hyun, and Guk Geum-kyung) was motivated by this original thought: Spreading Green Culture for Low Carbon Green Campus. Although we have never participated in any competition before, we just thought that this opportunity would alter out daily routine.

    Q. Why did you chose the idea of paper-saving through using double-sided report paper?

It was very important to offer practical examples of how university students can achieve A Low Carbon Green Campus. Our initial idea meeting was not successful, but eventually we came up with common ideas. Then, we found out desk was stacked up with papers. Soon, we realized that every university students use a lor of paper to submit reports. So, that's the area where we concentrated. Paper-saving through using double-sided report paper is an easy way for all university students to save our environment.

    Q. We want to hear about any dramatic episode that occurred while making the UCC.

Actually, none of us knew about producing a video. We didn't even have video equipment or knowledge of video-production computer software. A week before the deadline, we started to make short films using our cellular phones, and designed nights through for week.
A scene of scrubbing in public bath was filmed a room of our department. One student sacrificed his privacy and was filmed with his shirt off. Another student moved desks and chairs to make the atmosphere like a Public bath. Our filming was a memorable episode.

    Q. What was changed after participating in the contest and receiving the grand prize?
First, we divided the prize money 2,000,000 won into 500,000 won per person. Each of us used that money to meet our living expenses, for tuition, or to deposit it into a savings account.
As soon as we received the grand prize, People around us responded like " That's cool!" "How marvelous an outcome for CNU it is!" However, after a month there was no one who could remember out achievement. Sometimes we are sad Co see there is little change in recognizing the importance of saving the environment.
Anyway, our teamwork has gotten stronger. We have a meeting at least once a week; and we are planning to travel to a ski resort for several days of making memories.

    Q. Please tell us what your members' hope for in the future regarding the protection of the environment through CNU's 'Low Carbon Green Campus.'

The most important thing for CNU's 'Low Carbon Green Campus' is the school administrators' "attention." We need them to lead the businesses, students, and the school personnel to cooperate and work together. We participated at the awards ceremony without our school's attention. CNU makes no action of encouragement. We arc disappointed and saddened, Furthermore, this Poor attention will thwart the success of achieving a 'Low Carbon Green Campus' successful.
