Readers may have heard the word "social enterprise," the most used term in our lives these days. Most people are confused over the concept of corporate social contribution and social enterprise because they seem to benefit 5society in the same manner. But we need to know what the differences are, The Chungdae Post covers them in detail.
    Before starting, we need to know about corporate social responsibility. The European Commission defines Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as "a concept whereby companies integrate social and environmental concerns in their business operations and in their interaction with their stakeholders on a voluntary basis." Taking corporate social responsibility, many companies do various social contribution activities including donations of huge amount of money, It looks like they are competing with each other in social contribution activities. Let's analyze what they are doing.

'Moving the World Together'-Hyundai Motor Company(HMC)

Hyundai Motor Company has major social contribution activities such as Easy Move, Safe Move, Green Move, and Happy Move. These are highly related with automobile company's characteristics, project.
    To begin with, Easy Move, an initiative of HMC, is a campaign designed as bridge to help those with

 
mobility problems. Easy Move campaign is one of the core social contribution programs of HMC. The campaign provides practical help for the disabled and others who have mobility problems. in an effort to help the disabled move more freely in the world, HMC has developed and distributed mobility-aid vehicles for them, along with distributing free electronic wheelchairs. The new mobility-aid vehicles are more than cars to the disabled because these vehicles represent a new hope and a wider world.

    Next, Safe Move's purpose is to help children learn about the importance of traffic safety. 'Traffic Safety Class for Children' is a campaign of HMC initiated in 2002. Together with the Citizens Organization for Safe Life, 'traffic Safety Class for Children' is conducting various programs such as issuing and distributing guidelines and other learning materials for traffic safety education, operating traffic safety classes, broadcasting safety programs (EBS, TBS), handing out traffic safety Pamphlets, creating an online safety school, and maintaining traffic safety. 
    Third, as a part of ks systematic efforts for environmental preservation, HMC has launched the Hyundai Green Zones The desert prevention project in China launched in 2007 represents the first of these efforts. HMC plans to increase the area of the green space by 11.66 million m³ each year for the next five years to turn a vast bulk of the Inner Mongolian desert into a green and living place. The area is 660km north of downtown Beijing and has been the main source of dust storms that cause serious environmental damages the northern China and Korea every spring.
    Finally, it is about Happy Move. in 2005, the first employee volunteers' corps was launched. Happy Move is wellknown among university students because of the Happy Move Global Youth Volunteers program. It is a part of the Hyundai-Kia Automobile Group's social responsibility initiative through which university students are sent overseas to lend a helping hand those living in disadvantaged areas. The program sends about 1,000 university student volunteers to different corners of the globe every year. Not only university students, but also employees from the Hyundai-Kia Automobile Group work together, in addition, all costs are covered by the Hyundai-Kia Automobile Group.

    The most popular search engine in Korea is www.naver.com. NHN is the company that manages it and provides accessible social contribution activities to netizens on the Internet. However, its activities are not just done in virtual spaces, but they give actual help to organizations. Sellers are issued temporary ID cards and an initial set of ten free copies. Half a month of vending permits them to purchase copies of the magazine for 1,400 KRW each and sell them for 3,000 KRW thereafter. The Seoul metropolitan government supports this initiative.
    To become a vendor, one should be homeless or vulnerably housed or marginalised in some way. The Big Issue recognizes, however, that for many people, being housed is only the first stage in getting oft the streets; therefore, The Big issue Foundation exists to support vendors in gaining control of their lives by tackling the various issues which lead to homelessness. The Big Issue has been described as one of the must successful street newspapers worldwide, selling over 300,000 copies a week and listed as the third-favorite newspaper of young British people (age 15 to 24) in 2001.
    There are five localized editions of the magazine sold throughout the United Kingdom and vendors buy The Big Issue for $1.00 and sell it for $2.00. The magazine is also produced and sold in Australia, the Republic of ireland, South Korea, South Africa, Japan, Namibia, Kenya, Malawi and Taiwan. All vendors receive training, sign a code of conduct, and can be identified by badges which include their photo and vendor number.

The Beautiful Store
    The Beautiful Store which is the non-profit organizations and social enterprises was founded in 2002 by taking Oxfam in the United Kingdom as an example. The Beautiful Store does not profit from the third world people and is used for the socially disadvantaged, Some people thought it was linked to a

 
particular religion. The store is a place where the principles of sharing and circulation are implemented, its objective is not for trading new products, but trading used products with new minds, it is a market place for the second-hand items. This store will take the lead in changing society and sharing hardships across the globe.
    The Beautiful Store is not only the first registered social enterprise but also a pioneer which opens up new markers inside and outside Korea. They have a bundle of activities: charity shop for recycling, Public campaign,' charitable activity, Place for volunteer activity, growing a new flea market culture, fair trade, recycling design business, and so on. The first three activities will be explored in the below.
    First, the Beautiful Store is community oriented environmentally friendly movement. It aims at recycling. The Beautiful Store converts donated products to monetary the nation. Second, the Beautiful Store is taking the lead in public campaign that promotes the changes of public's consciousness by providing the opportunity to participate directly in recycling, environmentally friendly activities, sharing, and donation. Third, the Beautiful Store's 'charitable activity' includes not only regular profit sharing but also emergency relief when a need arises due to natural disasters or major accidents.     Corporate social contribution activities and social enterprise have differences in some way. We can nalyze companies activities based on profits and losses.
