Have you ever longed intensely for something? Did you just let the time flow naturally or did you organize a tight schedule? We are youth which id "cheong-chun" in Korean. It also means blossoming spring. It is time for our passions to blossom. Put everything down and look back at what you have done in your university life. As a new semester starts, The Chungdae Post world like to introduce, Park Shin-yuong, whose university life story world reawaken our passions.

Who is Park Shin-young?

Park Shin-young graduated from Handong Global University. During her undergraduate days, she won prizes in 23 competitions including Cheil Ad Awards held by Cheil Worldwide Inc.; one of the most competitive contests among university students. Focusing on one thing creating strategies, led her to become today’s Park Shin-young.

Ad Society, Motivator of My University Life
Frankly speaking, I failed passing all the tests required for entering the university communities which I desired to enter. Subsequently, I had hard times. One of my friends who felt sorry for me introduced me to the advertisement club and I was accepted. I seized this opportunity, and I did my best for the club. I picked up ideas from senior students as to how to plan for the advertising project. Once I won the prize, I decided to challenge myself and worked harder to prove that I am a very able person, not a lucky one. I think the spirit of my endless challenge led me to win many competition awards.

GPA or Experience
My favorite but most scary quote is “I pulled the plug on it at a time that I thought was right for me to exit.” This is from Julius Erving. You are not born to enjoy yourself. Also, time is limited to everyone: if you want to be an expert in more than one field, you have to work hard even if you do not feel like it. You cannot do everything you wish to accomplish. Therefore, you have to choose and concentrate on one of your choices. Relatively speaking, I had to give up everything I did not choose. For example, while others went on blind dates, I attended a meeting for contest preparation.

Do Not Feel Inferior
It was better for me not to go to one of the universities in Seoul. If a S university undergraduate wins 23 times at cutthroat competitions, it sounds a bit natural. However, in my case, some people say that she is amazingly outstanding because I am from local university and win those contests. I guess some students might be motivated by my story. Therefore, my university life is very meaningful and special to me. As we know, a dramatic story is better than a boring one. I think life is just the same.

Make Efforts Day and Night
While others took time off, I had to keep running to accomplish my goals. I had to give up the romance that young 20’s dream of in order to actualize my dream.
I also tried my best to control and manage myself even when others criticized. Some people told me that I was wasting time and energy on something difficult to achieve. At those moments, I was the only one who supported my choice. We often judge ourselves by saying ‘I cannot do it,’ or ‘It is impossible’ before start. I tried to shake off negative feelings and prove my talent to the world. Having a positive mind set is very important. For instance, I decided to read 100 related books instead of feeling insecure.

How to Achieve What You Longed for

First, do not fear failure. “Crumpled paper flies farther.” After failure, start again as if you never failed before. However, do it with strategy. In my case, before applying for the ad awards, I thought ‘Let’s read 100 different marketing strategies.’ There are many things to learn from others’ works.
Second, avoid giving schoolbook answers. Think about following questions: Is it affecting anyone? Can one of the judges be impressed by this? Can you google and see related information? Or is this one of “my own” ideas? Companies want creative ideas from young people!
Third, read books and take notes. I loved reading books when I was young and it became one of my habits to take memo about a book including quotation. I still write those on my blog and make a collection. This collection is my source of creative ideas. Why don’t you try one?

Episode
The day before Cheil Ad Award presentation, I went to Seoul for the preparation but my room was broken into. Clearly, this was the moment of crisis. Most people would say ‘I was unlucky,’ but I thought like this: ‘This means something. I have to tell this story after I win this contest.’ And it

became true. I guess I am ‘enjoying’ the moment of failure.

Just Face It
There is no one who excels at the beginning. You may get the feeling that is a waste. If you are afraid of failure, remember those who “experienced failures” will succeed at last. This is the most appropriate time for you to experience the bitterness of failure. If you have something you really want to do, whoever criticizes you, whatever situations you are in, just face it!
