On November 17th, the Faculty of Liberal Arts held ‘The 1st CNU Debating Competition.’ In holding this competition, they aimed to help students to be discerning. Although it was held for the first time, 27 teams participated in the competition and it received attention from many people.
The debated topic was a ‘donation-based admission system.’ After reviewers checked the 27 teams’ debate essays, 8 teams advanced to the finals. The debate started at 9 AM and lasted until 5 PM.
A team from the Faculty of Liberal Arts, Youngsan River consisting of freshmen and sophomores won first prize in the competition. They were full of spirit, youth and were incisive. As a result, they won the competition and received a cash prize of 1.5 million won. Seomjin River consisting of juniors from the Dept. of Law took second place, Hantan River consisting of freshmen from the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Geum River consisting of students from the College of Social Sciences took third and fourth place respectively.

Chae Jae-soon, the head of the Faculty of Liberal Arts, said “We designed this competition to encourage students to develop critical analysis skills which are vital in democratic society,” and “I hope students learn how to express their thoughts exactly.” “I am sure that a lot of students will be interested in many issues and develop to be leading people in many fields through this debating competition” said Cha.
The 1st CNU Debating Competition ended successfully and it is expected to be held every year.
One interesting thing is that the Seomjin River, which took second place in the competition, donated half of their prize money to the CNU Foundation. On November 26th, they visited the president's office and asked that the prize money be used for students of the Dept. of Law.
