Korea is a democratic country where every citizen can participate in politics. However, civil servants or teachers are in a special position when they don’t take a neutral tendency toward politics. It could cause a serious problem if teachers educate students with a biased political point of view. Therefore teachers need to take the position of political neutrality. Should teachers be banned for participating in politics? Do they have to possess political neutrality?
Education not on a right track makes society biased, shown in Nazism in Germany, Fascism of Italy, and blind worship to Kim Jong-Il in North Korea.
Schools have the greatest impact on students in modern society and teachers are a part of that. The most important reason for prohibiting political participation of teachers is to present a one-sided view which is the same as the instructor’s political positions, beliefs, and perspectives.
But I think we are so concerned about this problem. In high school, I came to have lots of interest in politics when my teachers gave a chance for us to discuss politics. During the discussing, we learned how to develop our political opinions and defend them, as well as how to be well-balanced among extreme insists and perspectives.
To make society healthy, we should be ready to listen to various voices. Teachers’ political participation should not be refrained. They can educate students into a right direction to build up the sound political opinions. Also they can help students to have their own political values and have mere interest in political participation, which will make Korea more advanced democratic country.
