Have you ever dreamed of becoming an entrepreneur?

If you have, you need to pay attention to the exciting venues for startups in and near CNU.

Startup Foundation at Student Hall II Startup Foundation at Student Hall II

The Startup Foundation Support Center is located on the 3rd floor of the Institute of Human Resources Development, also known as Student Hall II. When I came across this for the first time by chance, the place called Makers Vill at the entrance fascinated me. The place was well supplied with tools for making anything , and some unfinished works were there. The place reminded me of a garage, where successful American entrepreneurs like Steve Jobs or Bill Gates used to play with tools and develop their early business models.

The next time I visited, the manager of the startup education department guided me around the whole Cocoon Lounge. It is divided into Makers Vill 1, 2, and 3. Makers Vill 1 is a place for making things using various materials and tools such as irons, screwdrivers, electric drivers, knives, drills, etc. Makers Vill 2 is a place for laser cutting. A laser cutter can be used to cut wooden boards or engrave a text or design on a hard object. Makers Vill 3 is a room for 3D printing. There are more than ten 3D printers that are 200 mm by 200 mm in size. Plus one 3D printer is 800 mm by 800 mm. Have you ever used a 3D printer before? This is a great chance to learn how to use a 3D printer. Here is how to use the 3D printer facilities: First, model a design. But do not worry if you cannot model one. There are some designs already completed on sale, so you can use them. Second, check if there are printers available to use. Third, fill out an application form. Next, connect your USB to the printer and start to print. Then wait for several hours or a day while your design is printed. The time required depends on the density and the size of the item. Makers Vill is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays. I highly recommend that you visit here and try to make use of all three rooms.

The manager led me to the next places, Studio Vill and Cocoon Vill. These rooms are currently closed due to Covid-19. Before the shutdown, there was a place for thinking up ideas, conducting product trials, and registering a business. The room for startup club members was open 24 hours a day to help encourage new ideas. It will reopen once the pandemic is over.

The last places the manager led me to were Maru Vill and the Meeting Room. Maru Vill is a place for holding lectures. There is a small dais and many chairs and desks. Students also can use this place to study or complete assignments. The Meeting Room is available from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays. You can use this place when you need a private room for a meeting.

Is it not amazing that there are so many things to do in the Cocoon Lounge? The Cocoon Lounge and the Startup Support Center are available to every CNU student. Also, the foundation offers various startup training programs and events: the B.O.S.S. Lecture, the CNU-Vill Startup Idea Contest, and the Makers-Vill Lecture, and Startup Camp. If you want to get more information about the Startup Support Center, then visit the 3rd floor of Student Hall 2 or visit the website here: https://rims.cnu.ac.kr/startup/index.do.

Tips Town & Startup Park

Tips Town, right across the street from Building E2, was recently completed. TIPS is an acronym for Tech Incubator Program for Startup Korea. TIPS is designed to identify and nurture startups, supporting them by connecting tech startups with angel investors who provide funding. We are already quite familiar with some of Tips’ startups such as Dano, Spoon, and Class 101. Tips Town is a place where startups, investors, and supporting organizations work together. Startup Towns D1, D2, and D3 were also recently set up in Gung-dong, between CNU and KAIST. This whole area is called Startup Park. It is an open space where members of the startup ecosystem can freely communicate and collaborate.

The Startup Support Center in Student Hall II, Tips Town, and the Startup Park in Gung-dong demonstrate that CNU and the Daejeon local administration are focusing on discovering and supporting startup entrepreneurs. Our school, CNU, now offers an excellent environment for startups.
