In 2020, Chungnam University temporarily introduced a new grading policy providing students with an increased opportunity to receive higher grades, such as A+, A, or B, than in previous semesters. Much has been said about this, and I would like to express my opinion in this regard.

First of all, in my case, I strongly support the more flexible grading policy. The most important reason is that it can ensure an equal level of competitiveness with students from other schools when entering the job market. Currently, the majority of universities have eased grading restrictions to help overcome the disadvantages faced by students resulting from the ongoing pandemic. Many students have to take non-face-to-face lectures due to Covid-19, so temporary revisions to the grading policy can reduce the academic burden on students who may be experiencing some inconveniences in their studies these days. Student opinion on the less-restricted grading system can be said to be very positive, given that many students sympathize with the need for such measures and are satisfied with such measures.

Furthermore, such a grading system can be quite an attractive option for universities. As mentioned, it is possible to ensure students’ competitiveness when entering the job market. Students guaranteed stable and high grades have greater employment prospects, being more likely to get a professional job that requires high grades. This is an opportunity to create a virtuous cycle that can enable Chungnam National University to secure a higher reputation and talent. Therefore, the new grading system is not only convenient for students but also for school management.

Chungnam National University recently decided to revert to its established grading system. However, many universities are still implementing more flexible grading policies. Considering this, students at our school could eventually lose their competitiveness compared to other schools’ students with higher GPAs. Grades may be inflated if grading systems are less restricted. There are concerns that companies will view this negatively, but professionals still do not care much about it, and companies do not seem to be considering this in general. Thus, is it necessary to make an effort to ensure CNU students' social competitiveness and to raise the value of Chungnam National University to attract more talented individuals? Certainly. It is time for Chungnam National University to make a wise decision.
