Do you know how many students are placed on academic probation every semester? There are a number of students who have experienced being placed on academic probation. Why do students have difficulty in studying for exams? The answer lies in the differences between high school exams and university exams. High school exams focus on college entrance exams. Therefore, high school students are only good at choosing answers. In contrast, university classes focus on studying major subjects in depth. That is the reason why many students who have just entered university find studying their majors hard. But what if there were programs to help such students?
An Advancement of College Education (ACE) program supports students in many ways. About 620 students actually participated in a program that help students placed on academic probation study their majors. During the summer break, students were provided with group counseling on such topics as interpersonal skills, self-directed learning, and adapting to new learning and living environment to help them find out their weak points. Students can also learn practical ways to study through a workshop on learning method. The ACE program consists of four customizable curricula so that everyone who participates in this program can realize what their problems are. In addition, during the course of a semester, tutoring activities related to academic studies are provided by seniors in the same department as participating students.
The core goals of this program are to identify the main causes of students’ academic hardships and systematically support students through the kinds of activities mentioned above. Students at the Chungnam National University Center for Liberal Arts Education analyzed data obtained through one-on-one interviews and a learning strategy test taken by CNU students who participated last semester. Furthermore, the restrictions on academic scores of students who are limited to 15 credits have been lifted. Also, beginning in the near future, applicants will be  supported by scholarships and have chances to share their success stories with the other students.

If you want to apply for the program mentioned above or for other programs at CNU, you can drop by the Center for Liberal Arts Education between the hours of 09:00 to 18:00. This is how to apply for a program, and how to ask about programs on offer. There is nothing more to explain. Despite the simplicity of the application, however, few students apply for one. Not only the program discussed here but also a number of other programs can be offered if students want. Since the school has a limited means of promoting its programs, students should promote the services on offer by encouraging other students around the neighborhood to participate.
The number of students who received a scholastic warning during the first semester of 2017 was about 626 (3.7%), compared to 560 students (3.3%) in the first semester of 2016 and 520 (3.1%) in the second semester. In 2015, 630 students (3.7%) and 483 students (3.0%) received a scholastic warning in the first and second semesters respectively, showing that about 3.5 percent of students are placed on academic probation every semester. You can see that a few students are having trouble with their studies.
