Student assistants Who Reach out to those in need of help

CNU disability services center provides assistance to students with disabilities. The center provides various types of assistance for those in need. This article will introduce what assistants do to provide support for handicapped students.

 1. Services Offered

The assistants provide various support services, including mobility support, note-taking, academic support, tutoring and food services. The assistants provide help with mobilization for those who require wheelchairs or are visually impaired. The note-taking service is provided to students who suffer from hearing impairment or cannot properly use their hands. The academic support service is there to help students to understand the contents of learning materials. Academic support is, however, available only to students who have hearing impairment. English and math tutoring is also available. The food support service delivers food to dormitories, cafeterias, or other places.

 2. Eligibility Criteria

Any CNU students that is not taking leave can apply. Students with a level 1 word processor certificate are first selected for academic support service before other applicants are considered. For the tutoring services, the only students who are eligible are those that have achieved 700 points or higher on the TOEIC exam or who have a GPA of over 4.0 with a major in mathematics. The selected students may apply for both the state work scholarship and the general state work scholarship simultaneously. The selected students are required to attend an education session. Applications are processed via e-mail. Students who apply for the academic support or tutoring service need to submit documentary evidence, such as a transcript along with an application form.

It is very meaningful to be an assistant. There are also benefits for being one. The assistance is considered work so students are entitled to payment commensurate with the number of hours they spend working every month. The maximum amount of working hours is 20 hours per week. Working hours can be altered by the Korean Student Aid Foundation. Also, students can receive this scholarship concurrently with other scholarships. However, as mentioned, the general state work scholarship cannot be applied to concurrently with the Korean Student Aid Foundation.

Last year, CNU was selected as a university that provides the best educational welfare for handicapped students. Specifically, CNU achieved the highest points in the field of teaching and learning. From the results, we can tell that CNU is doing its best for handicapped students through the Disability Services Center. This article has illustrated what assistants provide for disabled students. If students pay attention to this and help other students with disabilities in line with the CNU effort, CNU will be a better place in terms of educational welfare. Students can feel much from helping those in need of help.
