It is a somewhat unfamiliar field, but please attention especially if you think you may be interested in this field! Let’s listen about his life.

  1. What Is Laboratory Medicine And What Does He Do in the Hospital?

There are some treatment departments like the internal medicine department, ear-nose-and-throat department, and ophthalmology that many of patients visit. These departments are well-known to many people. By contrast, laboratory medicine where he is working now is hardly known and is an unfamiliar department to many people. So CP reporter asked him about laboratory medicine.

Laboratory medicine doctors are those who work for other doctors in a word. This does not mean that laboratory medicine doctors are in charge of doctors of other departments. They perform various examinations for selecting the right medicine and for early discovery of all diseases. Also they do jobs like diagnosis, observation, determine treatment effects, and prognosis. Their other role is to examine, keep, and manage data that many other doctors use. In short, they manage the quality of examination. They also analyze examinations and help other doctors. So they are called “doctors for doctors.” They don’t meet patients directly like other doctors do, so their stress caused by patients is minimal. Laboratory medicine is an unfamiliar department, but it is necessary not only to patients but also to other doctors. In this respect, it looks like an attractive treatment department.

   2. What Was The Most Memorable Moment In His Career?

He has been appointed president of the ‘Korean Society of Clinical Chemistry’, clinical chemistry chairman of ‘the Korean Society for Laboratory Medicine’ and head of the science department of ‘the Korean Association of Quality Assurance for Clinical Laboratories’. He was also awarded a citation from the Secretary of Health and Human Services. It is easy to know that he is passionate about his work by his various activities. So CP reporter asked him about what his most memorable moment was.

He said that his most memorable moment was the 22nd International Congress of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory medicine that was held 2 years ago in Istanbul. The ‘Korean Society of Clinical Chemistry’ had the right to host the World Academic Society there. So he can answer it without hesitation. The International Congress of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine is an international contest that is held every three years. At this congress, 5,000 experts of the laboratory medicine and the clinical chemistry field from 100 countries attended. They presented knowledge and ideas from their fields and discussed them. In 2020, the 24th International Congress of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine will be held in Seoul. It is the second time the conference will be held in Asia. He said that hosting an international symposium in Korea is one of the examples on how our studies have reached world-class status. He also said that he will do his best with his executives in the Congress of Clinical Chemistry to make a success of the upcoming International Congress.

  3. What Prompted Him to Be A Doctor?

His father is a lawyer. Under the influence of his family, he thought he wanted to have a job which could serve society. There are many people who are doctors in his family, so he decided to be a doctor himself.

  4. How Was His Campus Life?

He learned violin when he was young, so he performed in the orchestra of the College of Medicine. He said getting various experiences at university is very important. It is good to get extensive experience within your major, and not to become biased on one subject. He emphasized the importance of experience because various experiences in early life will be a big help to us in the future.

   5. How Does He Think A about the Imbalance of Medical Supplies?

Recently, many medical students flocked to some departments like plastic surgery. Accordingly, an imbalance of medical supplies has occurred. CP reporter asked him how to solve this?

He said that we don’t have to think about this too negatively. Several years ago, obstetrics and pediatrics were unpopular departments. Even though there was a lack of doctors in the areas of obstetrics and pediatrics, now these departments have become popular again. Like this, the market principle is also applied to the medical supply system. Supply can be reduced in a certain area but it will be increased again someday. Unpopular departments at present will take center stage later. So the policy of providing some advantages to unpopular departments is not necessary.

He said distortion happens because of the hospital operating system at present, not the supply system. Investment to other incomes areas like parking facilities or restaurants for the Competitiveness of hospital causes distortions.

  6. What Are His 2016 Goals?

He is a director of planning and coordination for Chungnam National University Hospital now. This year is the last year that he can sever as a director of planning and coordination at the hospital. Also it is the last year that he can serve as a president of the Korean Society of Clinical Chemistry. His goal is to complete these two positions successfully. With completion of these two roles, happiness with his family is the second goal.

  7. His Message for CNU Student

He said that the status of CNU has risen higher than ever before. So CNU students don’t have to be intimidated. Also, CNU students already have outstanding abilities. In comparison, they are unfamiliar in how to express themselves. It seems that they don’t assert their opinions or know how to do something in front of many people. According to him, it is good to develop communication abilities and expression abilities.

People who have these abilities are competitive people. He said challenge spirit is needed because students should try all things and do their best for self-development. If CNU students improve these points and develop, they will be globally competitive students.
