Slow Steady Wins The Race

    Meteorological Administration official Lim Jang-Su

You may watch today’s weather forecast on TV at the beginning of the day. It could be an everyday affair to you, but there is one organization which wants to provide people with accurate weather information. CP reporter met the person who forecasts the weather at the Daejeon Regional Meteorological Administration.

  Let’s listen to his story!

   * Who Is He?

Lim Jang-Su majored in physics, and he joined the Meteorological Administration in 1987. He now works in the observation and forecast division at the Daejeon Regional Meteorological Administration. He won lots of prizes for his work.

   1. What Was The Most Memorable Thing About His School Years?

He spent time at home, in lecture rooms, and in the library during his school days. He studied harder than any other student for 4 years. He felt like the central library was his other home. The most memorable thing for him was when he dozed off in the library in the early winter while he was studying. He was left alone and the other students went away without a word. He was forced to sleep in a squatting posture in the laboratory because he missed the last bus for Gongju. It made him become more mature.

   2. Why Did You Dream of Becoming A Civil Officer?

He wanted to find a stable job after he graduated from Chungnam National University. He saw a recruitment notice about the need for Korea Meteorological Administration officials by chance. One of the subjects for the examination was physics. He took the exam because the principles of weather were closely connected with physics. It is why he has spent a lifetime as a Meteorological Administration official.

   3. What Role Do Meteorological Administration Have?

People are apt to associate simply conveying the weather forecast if they think of the meteorological administration. However, the work of the meteorological administration varies from the weather forecast. It produces a weather forecast based on meteorological data observing sky, land, sea, and space for 365 days and involves massive amounts of materials from countries all over the world. There are various areas to consider, like the effects of earthquakes and volcanoes, climate change, hydrometeorology, and cosmic meteorology, based on observation and forecasting.

   4. What Are The Effects of the Weather Forecast on People?

It could be said generally that common people decide the schedule of a week, even a month, based on the weather forecast. On the other hand, it has specific influences on certain regions. For example, it helps Seosan to produce delicious ginger. It also had influence on other countries like Kuwait and Vietnam by teaching meteorological technology. In addition, it assists with heat vulnerability by giving notice beforehand because a heat wave can be fatal to senior citizens.

   5. What Is The Most Memorable Thing About His Career?

The first thing is his steady contribution to education. He teaches about weather and meteorological science to students and their parents during vacations or weekends. He sometimes attracts student’s attention by mentioning climate change that the average temperature might rises 3.2˚C higher in 2050. Second, heavy snowfalls were very memorable to him when he worked in Gangwon-do in 1991. He couldn’t go home for three days because the snow piled up to 140cm high. Finally, it was very memorable when traffic congestion happened in Gyeongbu Expressway on March in 2004 because of heavy snow when he worked in Seoul.

   6. What Does He Think about False Weather Forecasts?

Chungdae Post (CP) reporter was curious why false weather reports occur. He answered kindly, “There are still some exceptional factors.” These days, weather is measured by various methods, and worked out by a supercomputer. However, it is impossible to measure many factors influencing the atmospheric status perfectly. An observational error, a numerical model equation’s error, and so on, could be happen at any time. Also, there could be misunderstanding in the process of communicating the weather forecast to people.

   7. What Are His Plans for The Future?

The first thing he wants to keep is never to forget his about his country and his parents. He promised he will maintain his original intention that he had at the beginning of joining the Meteorological Administration. Second, he hopes to push forward a voluntary service for teaching Meteorological Science systematically. He wants to contribute to expanding the understanding of this field. Finally, he wants to serve his parents with sincere devotion. His mother carried him on her back for about 7 years when he was young because he suffered from acquired cerebral palsy. He is always thankful for his mother.

   8. What He Wants to Say to CNU Students…

Only a person who endeavors for happiness can realize a dream. Even though his body is uncomfortable because of the cerebral palsy that he had suffered when he was 2 years old, he tried harder to come up one step from behind during his school days or like at work. Accordingly, if CNU students do their best with having positive thinking and being considerate of other’s feelings, there can be good results for every student.

   9. What Means CNU to You…

No matter how hard he studied, there were many parts that he didn’t understand during his school days. However, CNU is becoming valuable background, carrying forward several tasks at work place after he graduated . CNU is the place that feels like a real home for him. He was very pleased to work near his alma mater after graduation even though it was almost 30 years ago. CP reporter was impressed by his last saying because CP felt his love for CNU. “I hope there will be more homecoming days than ever before in the future.”
