Or you could have a dream which was related to your interests and hobbies. It’s likely to have dreams outside your own interests and hobbies, however, CP reporter got to know there an alumnus who nurtured his hobby into a career. Let’s listen to his story!

   * Who Is He?

Yoo Sung Yeon majored in Mechatronics Engineering here at CNU but now he works as a webcomic artist. Isn’t it strange that the person who majored in engineering became a webcomic artist? Drawing pictures was really a simple hobby for him. He used to post a webtoon in one community site as a hobby. There was an offer that serializes webtoons from the portal site Yahoo, which provided his career with momentum. His first work was <Prevention of Cut>. Now his webtoon is being published serially at the portal site Naver.

  1. Where Does He Get His Inspiration?

He says, “It depends on the situation.” In the case that his webtoon is presently under serialization, he comes up with the idea from the cell phone he likes. He has had the resources in mind for years. When racking his brain, he makes a story by changing his ideas in succession. On the other hand, he used to come up with ideas before going to bed. They were sometimes related to his college experiences, such as MT trips.

  2. How Is The Process of Drawing Done?

First of all, when he comes up with a new idea, he writes them down. After this, he arranges his sub-ideas. Rough sketches of the story are specified then. Pieces of illustration are arranged for easier viewing, and then he paints the vital pictures as he inspired. After editing again, he sends a draft by e-mail to his editor. The draft has to be sent by 3 p.m. the day before the day that he serializes the webtoon. Producing one day’s webtoon is always different. It sometimes takes him a week to finish this work. Because he is not a specialist, he had to learn drawing formally. He says that he feels “If there is no tooth, use gum”, which he is doing his work.

  3. What Does His Nickname, “Fear of Eyeballs,” Mean?

“Fear of Eyeballs” was actually the title of a flash animation that he likes. He wrote on BBS (Bulletin Board System) of a community site. It was a play to him, so he used the nickname “Fear of Eyeballs” until 2011. He changed his online handle to his real name in 2012 because the nickname gave the readers the impression that he was unfriendly.

  4. When Is He the Most Proud of Himself?

It was very amazing to see that anyone looked at his webtoons. In the early days, he was really thankful for comments that were written by people who lived in other cities. It came to his attention that a person who lived in Canada said he was looking at his cartoons with interest. At that point in time, he was very pleased to meet a lot of other webtoon artists. It was helpful to him because he could hear what he couldn’t think about before.

  5. Why Does He Run An Official Home Page?

He has been running his own official website for about one year. It introduces him in detail to anyone who wants to know more about his history. It also let people know his work that has appeared in his series. He sometimes draws webtoons separately from the webtoons on Naver, so people can know about the things which are related to him as well as about him.

  6. How Does He Get to Know Other Writers?

First, webtoon artists have a community cafe just for themselves. They could exchange dialogue with other writers through the Internet due to the nature of their jobs. If any writer lives close to his house, he sets up an appointment and meets him or her. Second, the persons working on webtoons have an end-of-the-year party, so they can meet other artists through this event. Finally, they often use instant messenger communication.

  7. What about His Life as A Webtoon Artist?

He thinks that his job is a really good fit for him. The first reason is that there is no drinking culture in webtoon society. Because he doesn’t like drinking culture, he works comfortably without limits. The next reason is that he doesn’t have to worry about waking up early. His work is done regardless of time. He is sometimes stressed if the stories don’t hit. He also doesn’t have a fixed working schedule. However, he thought it fits well to him compared with the life of a man working in a company.

  8. What Is His Goals For The Future?

His goal is to live happily ever after. He wants to keep serializing his webtoons continuously. It is likely to be aware of the way other people are looking at them. However, he tries to work in his own ways while not bothering other people.

  9. He Says to CNU Students…

It is very important to live trying to love yourself first. He thinks that the true person that you need to cherish is just yourself. Don’t blame yourself. You would be happy if you cherish yourself without awareness of your surrounding environment. To date, if you haven’t done what you really want to do, think about what you would like to be doing. Then you can know what you want to do and what you don’t like. After which you can decide about your future career. Cherish yourself!
