Let’s Think about Your Recognition of Vintage Cars in Korea

What do you think when you see an vintage car, owned by an old man, that seemed to be produced more than 20 years-ago? Probably, many people may think, “That man is the poor, why didn’t he change his car into the new one?” However, he might have a strong attachment to his car. In Korea, the recognition of the car is existing in a lower level than other countries, such as England, Germany, and so on. Vintage Car Festival in those countries are nationwide, but it is only a minority event in Korea. To renovate this situation, Shin Jin-suk who was majoring in Architecture and his friend, Ha Taehyun who took a graduate course of Architectural Engineering, planned the Vintage Car Project and practiced it during the week in Gyeong sang Province.

This Project Was Considered as A Wonderful Journey of Youth, But…

How gorgeous! Pony, the vintage car, speeds along the street with two young men! However, They succeed in that project after many trials and errors. For accomplishment of the 7 days project, they wandered all around the country for a month to get a Pony after preparing it in written form consisted of about 30 pages of Power Point. Although the two students explained the purpose of their project, nobody was ready and willing to comply with their request. On the way, one supporter who was fascinated by their aim came into view and bought a Pony. Yet, it was not all. There were a lot of hardships to make progress on the project. The visibility range of the car is very short, so that they switched on one more light. Moreover, if they turned on the air conditioner, the engine was turned off. Therefore, there was no chance to feel the wind of the air conditioner. They had to sprinkle water over the bonnet every one hour to reduce a overheating; top speed barely reached 60km/h.

Have A Recollection through A Vintage Car

They chose a Pony car after they got a survey, because the Pony has been remained as a representative Korea vintage car in people’s memory. People who they met on the street, requested through the SNS and internet cafe promotion took pictures with their family. Picture that has a memory between child and father is a point of contact and has a story to form a bond of sympathy. Children were able to acquire knowledge about the vintage car; their fathers were able to remind his past recollection.
